| | This page describes basic circuit R.T. for helicopters.
Usually given initial clearance for 'lift-off' (take-off clearance follwoed by circuit instructions, QFE and wind:
e.g. 'G-OCOV cleared lift off (take off), circuits left hand, grass runway 24, not above 700 ft, QFE 1004, wind 230 degrees 7 kts.'
Crossing of a runway may be required:
e.g. 'G-OV, cross runway 23'.
or 'G-OV, hold position, landing DC-9 runway 23'.
or 'G-OV, after the departing Cessna 210, cross runway 23, report vacated'.
Notes:
| | 1. Normally helicopter movements are permitted to continue without the usual standard R/T circuit calls used in the fixed wing circuit. | | | 2. The helicopter circuit being operated within the fixed wing circuit and below (i.e. helicopters 700 ft. QFE, fixed wing 1,000 ft. QFE). | | | 3. Call may be required if more than one helicopter is in the circuit. | | | 4. Helcopters should howver 'listen out' at all times |
Leaving the Circuit
Clearance to leave the circuit will usually include direction to which helicopter wishes to leave the airfield, a height (or altitude restriction, in order to allow for vertical separation between circuit traffic and the departing helicopter) and a pressure setting (QNH).e.g. 'G-OCOV, leave the circuit on track to the south east, VFR, not above 700 ft., QNH 1013.
Joining Circuit
Similarly, height restriction may be imposed:
e.g. 'G-OV, join not above above 500 ft., VFR, QFE 1004, report airfield in sight
then: 'G-OV, report airfield boundary'
then: 'G-OV, cross runway 23, clear to land, wind 230 degrees 10 kts'
or: 'G-OV, land at the helicopter H, wind 230 degrees 10 kts'
*or: 'G-OV, land at your discretion'
* - if landing site is out of view of ATC or if AFIS in operation.'
