When a person first learns to fly his immediate concentration is on learning how to control the aircraft and develop his physical reflexes to achieve judgement in handling the controls so that the aircraft does what he wants it to do.

However in flying, judgement involves two specific areas, one which relates to the development to physical skills and the other which relates to the making of correct decisions. Lack of judgement in making decisions usually stems from a lack of appreciation or failure to properly comprehend the many items of knowledge which in themselves form the basis of understanding and without which the correct decision in handling a particular situation cannot be made without a large element of luck.

In order to operate an aircraft in safety a pilot will need to develop the elements of skill and good judgement and the quality of these requirements will largely be based upon the acquisition and correct application of knowledge.

Probably the greatest difficulty in gaining the necessary knowledge relating to aircraft operation is the number of technical subjects which need to covered. The pilot must have a sound understanding of all aspects of operating his aircraft and of the environment in which he operates. This means he will need to study and receive instruction in a wide curriculum.
